Fidelity

This was actually posted on June 23, 2008, but Wordpress kind of… broke. XD

I think I’m developing an obsession with Anne Boleyn/Henry VIII of England and that whole general era of history. XD I watched The Other Boleyn Girl on my flight to San Francisco a few weeks ago, and since then… oh the obsession. I watched the movie again, am about 3/4 finished the book of the same name, and I’ve started watching the television show The Tudors. It’s like crack. XD

On the job front, things are going … meh. I hate my job. I’m supposed to be getting full time hours (5 days a week), but am barely scraping by with 2 or 3. It’s frustrating. Not to mention, apparently the owner of the hotel thinks that we should be able to clean 16 rooms a day. That’s just not possible. 12 is what myself and the other housekeepers are used to doing. Our boss has been giving us 14 for the past week, but it’s not going well. Instead of getting out at 4:30 like we’re supposed to, I’ve been there until 5:30/quarter to 6:00 every time. It’s just not possible do 14 rooms in the time we can only physically do 12. Even thinking of having to do 16 makes me incredibly stressed out… We’re all threatening to quit if that should happen.

In happy job news, actually, I just got a call from the Hilton Garden Inn (it’s the hotel next door to the Holiday Inn Express where I work) for an interview for a position on front desk. EEE!! I’ve been wanting a job on front desk for the past 3 years. And!! *bounces* I’m guaranteed 24 hours a week (it’s only part time, so I’d still keep my icky Holiday Inn job), and it pays 1.00$ an hour more. For easier work! *wants* I have an interview tomorrow night… after work. XD I feel like I’m cheating on the Holiday Inn. Actually, I am. But I kind of don’t care. I don’t owe them anything. XD

My grandparents are coming to visit for a few days tomorrow. Yay! :D Always exciting. Things are going to be cramped though since we’re still living in the rental house and we don’t have a guest room. So, the grandparents will get my parents room, my mom will be sleeping with me, my dad will be sleeping in Kyle’s room (my brother), and Kyle will be sleeping in his tent. Haha. Anyhow, they’re coming up because Kyle’s graduation from high school is on Thursday. Aww, he’s all grown up now! Speaking of which, his prom was today and I can’t help but share this ridiculously cute picture of him and his date… Aww! How cute is that? More his date, Kyle’s kind of awkward… as always. Haha. XD

Anywiggle, I’mma toddle off as my beloved Friends is on television. It’s a bit pathetic that even hough I’ve seen every episode at least a dozen times each, I still faithfully tune in every night. God bless syndication!

What the frak, blog?!

It’s been awhile! I mean, the last time I blogged here, I’m pretty sure there was still the odd woolly mammoth wondering about. It may have been on the throes of extinction - I’m a little fuzzy on my details - but none the less, it’s been EONS! Anyhow, lameness aside, it’s pathetic how terrible I am at keeping this website updated. Inspired by Michi’s stunning revamp, I vow to get my butt in gear and work on reviving this website with new content and blogging. Yes, blogging. Crazy, I know. And when I don’t (because it will happen), you all have permission to whip me into shape. Ka-chhh!

So what have I been up to lately? Aside from being a slave to the Holiday Inn Express, I’ve been keeping myself busy working on my portfolio to apply to art school (more on that in two shakes of a lamb’s tail) and reading until my eyes fall out (… and ditto).

It’s not set in stone yet, but I’m about 90% sure that once I finish my BMus, I’m going to truck myself on down to San Francisco to study Interior Design and Illustration at The Academy of Art. I’ve been looking around online at various schools, and initially I was looking at RISD, but the pros for going to the Academy FAR outweigh those at RISD. At the Academy of Art I’m: guaranteed admission (as I’m a second degree student), do not have to submit a portfolio (except if I want to receive permission from the department to skip foundation level courses, which I will do anyway), can graduate in about 2.5 years as opposed to 4, the price for international students is no more expensive than for US students, and while I’m in the program, can submit my portfolio for review for my masters and potentially start my masters early (if the department deems my work good enough). Hello, AWESOME!! At some point this summer, I’m going to fly down and check out the school and San Fran to see how the meshing goes. If she goes well, Academy of Art, ahoy!

And reading! Since I’ve been working an insane amount (8:00-5:00, five days a week), and with it being quite physically demanding work, I usually just come home at night, eat dinner, and zonk out in bed and read until I sleep. Cycle repeat. So I’ve been doing oodles of reading. In the last 3-4 weeks, I’ve read Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex (The beginning took a little while to get into, but once you past the first 100-ish pages, it takes a complete turn for the better. Very informative and eye-opening story about gender and sexuality.), Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (I am in LOVE with this book and highly, highly recommend it to those who haven’t read it yet. I wasn’t familiar with Plath at all before I read this, but now I am definitely looking forward to checking out her poetry and essays. It’s unfortunate she never wrote another novel.), Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper (This was upon the recommendation of my mom - it’s her favourite book. It was a wee bit sappy for me, and I’m not usually a fan of tear-jerker family-love stories, but it was decent.), and I’m currently in the midst of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights (…which I’m finding a bit bizarre. I won’t make any firm judgments though considering I’m less than half-way in as it stands).

That’s life in a nut-shell!

Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I’ve Got Love In My Tummy

I was supposed to go see the opera Peter Grimes live from the Met this afternoon, but have decided against it. It would have been neat to see, but a) it was a 4 hour opera, plus 1 hour commute there and back to the movie theatre, b) the assignment we’re supposed to write about it is a 4 page review, and is only worth 1% of our final mark, so c) for the amount of time and effort I’d be putting into it, it’s not worth it. I’m far from being the kind of person who just doesn’t do assignments because they don’t want to, but I have a dozen and one other things for school to do right now, and frankly, something worth 1% of my final mark is not worth it. Have I mentioned my teacher is insane! I have more work for that class than my 5 other classes combined. It’s ridiculous. In total, I’ve written 40 pages in papers for him, and those 40 pages have only been worth a total of 8% of my final mark. I love the class, and I love the teacher, but the workload is beyond insane.

On the topic of school, course selection started this week. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far with mine since the itty bitty little Art department we have at Acadia hasn’t posted any of the classes they’re offering next year. I’m kind of depending on them for 12 credits next year. XD I’ve picked some of my other classes though - Children’s Literature, Beginner German 1 and 2, The Romantics, Fantasy Literature (which I may drop depending on the Art courses - it’s kind of a back-up course), my Music History Thesis (scary! But a requirement), my Graduation Show (also scary!!! And also required), piano lessons, Choir, and Post-Tonal Theory. I’m hoping the Art department will offer 19th Century Art History, 20th Century Art History, and will accept me to do two semesters of independent study. If that works out, I’ll drop Fantasy Lit. and Post-Tonal Theory. We’ll see. I’m quite annoyed, actually, that they don’t have the Art classes listed yet. Every other department has theirs up. Grr.

Am home at the parents’ house for the weekend. We’re actually celebrating Easter, so that means lots of yummy food. Excitement! It’s funny, ever since I’ve moved out, I’ve come to appreciate good quality food so much more. Especially since I’m very limited in my cooking skills. XD I’ve also come to appreciate left-overs on such a high level it’s insane. I pretty much raid my parents’ fridge before I head back to Wolfville. XD

Too Busy To Blog; Not Too Busy For Some Random Thoughts

Well! Hello! It’s been a ridiculous amount of time since I’ve written here. I’m not going to lie, I’ve always been horrible at keeping a blog. Failure at life, yo.

Anywiggle, I’ve finally re-opened this website, too. It’s been neglected/on hiatus for far too long, and I finally got my act together and started piecing things back together again. There’s still a few odds and ends that need to be tied up, but hey - at least there’s something here, so I call that accomplishment!

I started watching La Vie En Rose this afternoon, and I’m really enjoying it thus far. I’ve got to say, the French make some damn good movies: Amélie, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Paris, Je t’Aime. Much love.

I’m never really sure what to write here since I generally just update my livejournal with all my crazy ramblings. Perhaps I’ll stop crossposting this there as I hate to repeat myself. XD So yeah… for those of you who solely follow girldisappearing.org, I’m alive and didn’t fall to my death into a gigantic snow bank.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November

I know it’s not the 5th of November, but it was yesterday. And yesterday was definitely a day to remember as a huge turning point of Acadia Strike 2007: the Board of Governors and Acadia University Faculty Association (AUFA) reached a tentative agreement. They were voting on it this afternoon and we should hear the results any minute now. Assuming AUFA accepts the offer, we’ll be back in school on Thursday. Huzzah! In all honesty, I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about school before. XD Though I’m not looking forward to the masses and masses of work they’re going to pile on us. Woes.

Last week my mom and I went to visit family in Ontario for a few days. And we may have snuck a little shopping trip to Michigan in there as well. ;) The States has the best shopping ever. It kills me. It really does. So much awesome stuff! I think I broke my bank account. XD

I also forgot to mention that a few weeks ago two friends and I signed our lease on our apartment for next year. Woo! I haven’t lived with anyone since my satanic room mate of doom in first year (oh buddy), so I was a little weary at first, but I feel better about it and am super excited now. :D It helps that I’ve known them both since I was in 6th grade. Heh.

I think I may be starting to develop a potentially dangerous addiction to Facebook. *wail* I tried to resist it for so long, but alas… to the dark side, I have gone.

And to end with a little bit of randomosity: I’ve memorized about half of my Sonata! *victory dance* This really affects no one, and I’m sure no one cares, but I was excited and had to tell someone. I never memorize anything this early before juries. Go me! The piano teacher of doom had better give me a giant gold star when we get back to classes or I’ll be highly disappointed. :P
